What do you mean these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA?

Before we dive into ingredients, product benefits, and healthy skin choices, I want to briefly talk about something that often causes confusion for consumers: regulation. In the United States, this largely involves the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Regulatory agencies play an important role in protecting public safety by establishing standards for product testing, labeling, and marketing. However, the regulatory process is complex and extremely costly, which can create challenges for small, science-driven businesses trying to bring thoughtfully formulated products to market.

Unlike large corporations, small businesses typically do not have the resources to conduct extensive clinical trials or navigate every regulatory pathway available for therapeutic claims. Instead, many independent formulators rely on peer-reviewed scientific literature, established ingredient safety data, and practical formulation experience when developing products and communicating their intended benefits.

Most of the products I create are topical personal-care items that fall within the regulatory category of cosmetics rather than drugs. Cosmetic products are not required to undergo pre-market approval in the same way medications do. While functional descriptions such as “moisturizing,” “soothing,” or “supporting the appearance of healthy skin” may be based on available scientific evidence about ingredients, these statements should not be interpreted as medical or therapeutic claims.

So yes – statements made on this website have not been evaluated by the FDA. That doesn’t mean they’re pulled out of thin air, and it certainly doesn’t mean I’m sitting in my kitchen inventing miracle cures made from purple elephant ear wax that promise to fix your migraines in exchange for your first-born child and your retirement fund. Oversight matters. Without some form of regulation, the marketplace would quickly turn into a circus of exaggerated claims and expensive disappointments. My goal is to stay firmly on the side of science, common sense, and honest communication.

You’ve probably seen the statement “These claims have not been evaluated by the FDA” on product labels and wondered what that actually means. In simple terms, it means the product has not gone through the formal drug-approval process used for medications that are intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. It does not necessarily mean the ingredients are unsafe or that there is no science behind them. Instead, it reflects how different types of products — such as cosmetics or dietary supplements — are regulated. These products can still be thoughtfully formulated and supported by published research, but they are not reviewed by the FDA in the same way prescription drugs are.

There absolutely need to be checks and balances, and I support that. At the same time, one of the biggest problems for consumers – and for small businesses – is that different kinds of products are regulated in different ways, which can get confusing fast. Dietary supplements, for example, fall under a different regulatory framework than drugs, which is part of why you often see disclaimers stating that the FDA has not evaluated certain claims. If you want to learn more about how dietary supplements are regulated, the FDA has a helpful overview here. If you want a more consumer-friendly explanation of how to think about supplements, labels, and what those statements do or do not mean, the NIH has a useful guide here. And since I create topical products, it also helps to understand that cosmetics are treated differently too, which you can read about on the FDA’s cosmetics page here.

The point is that the presence of a disclaimer does not automatically mean something is nonsense, and the absence of one does not automatically mean something has been thoroughly proven either.

So what does all of this really mean in the real world? It means that small businesses like mine often have to walk a very careful line. I’m not a massive corporation with a legal department and a clinical trial budget – I’m one scientist who genuinely cares about creating thoughtful, healthier options and empowering your knowledge along the way. Regulations help protect consumers, but they can also make it harder for smaller, science-minded brands to communicate the full story behind their products. In the end, it still comes down to trust and personal responsibility. I encourage you to stay curious, read ingredient labels, ask questions, and choose companies whose values and transparency feel right to you.

My approach to formulation and education is grounded in years of scientific study and professional experience in laboratory and health-related fields. This background has shaped a strong commitment to evidence-informed decision-making, ingredient awareness, and thoughtful product development focused on supporting overall skin wellness.

The goal of this website is not to overwhelm you with marketing claims, but to encourage informed choices. When we share research, product insights, or educational content, our intention is to promote transparency and help readers develop the confidence to evaluate health and personal-care information independently. An informed consumer is ultimately the best safeguard for long-term wellness.

In the end, a disclaimer stating that statements have not been evaluated by the FDA does not automatically mean a product – or an educational article like the ones I share here – is misleading or without value. It often reflects the reality that smaller, research-minded businesses and independent educators operate within different regulatory frameworks than pharmaceutical manufacturers. Some claims in the wellness world are certainly exaggerated, but many are rooted in thoughtful interpretation of scientific research and a sincere desire to offer healthier options or clearer information. My hope is not simply that you trust what I create or write, but that you feel empowered to learn how to evaluate both products and health information for yourself. An informed and curious consumer is one of the strongest forces for positive change in the modern wellness landscape.

For health,

Tober
